It’s here! The Democratic Party holds a Reorganization every 4 years. What is it, and what does it mean to you? Just as the National Party elected a new chair, Ken Martin, in February, here in Kentucky we elect new leadership, from the grassroots to the state level, this spring.
In Campbell County, what this looks like is that on Saturday, April 26, we will hold elections at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, located at 3 Chalfonte Place, on South Fort Thomas Avenue in Fort Thomas, starting at 10:00 a.m. The elections will be in three stages: Precinct Elections, Elections for Executive Committee, and elections for delegates to the state convention June 14 in Owensboro, Kentucky.
This is the most grassroots level of leadership. All registered Democrats are eligible to run and vote for a spot on their precinct committee. Precinct committees consist of one man, one woman, and one person under the age of 40 of either gender. You are only eligible to nominate and vote for people within your precinct. We have 46 precincts in Campbell County, so that is potentially 138 precinct committee members. Once a precinct committee is elected, they elect one of their members to serve as precinct chair for that precinct.
What do precinct committees do? The role can vary, but their job is to support the Executive Committee in recruiting volunteers and getting out the vote. The bylaws of the Kentucky Democratic Party state that duties include, but are not limited to: “working to support the [Executive Committee’s] organizing goals, including developing and implementing voter contact and volunteer recruitment efforts within the precinct, hosting phonebanks and other organizing events, and other duties as assigned by the [Executive Committee].”
Immediately after the elections for Precinct Committees, we will vote for our County’s Executive Committee members. This committee is the central organizing entity for the Democratic party in Campbell County. They organize, recruit and support candidates for local office, fundraise and determine how funds will be spent, and otherwise direct Democratic efforts in the county. Any registered Democrat is eligible to serve on the Executive Committee, but only Precinct Committee members may nominate and vote for Executive Committee.
The Executive Committee consists of 10 men and 10 women, with at least 1 member under the age of 40. It should also reflect the composition of the community where it is based. Members elected to the Executive Committee should expect to attend monthly meetings, serve on at least 1 committee, attend Party events, and volunteer for local candidates.
The last election of the day is for delegates to the Kentucky Democratic Party state convention, which is being held June 14 in Owensboro. Delegates will vote on members to serve on the State Central Executive Committee, which is the committee that handles the business of the state party. There will be two elections, first delegates will elect members to serve from the Fourth Congressional District, then delegates will elect at-large members. Campbell County has 26 delegate spots to the state convention.
As with the Executive Committee, any registered Democrat in the county is eligible to serve as delegate, but only precinct committee members can nominate and vote for delegates.
If you are running for Executive Committee, please be aware that the Executive Committee must meet and vote for a chair and vice chair immediately after the elections are completed.
How do I get involved?
Just attend Reorganization on April 26. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. and closes promptly at 10:00 a.m. so that voting can begin. We strongly encourage people to pre-register, which can be done below.
Should I register even if I do not want to run for a position?
Yes! We encourage all Democrats to attend so they can have a say on who serves on the committees for their precinct.
I cannot attend that day due to a conflict. Can I still run and vote?
We do understand that there are people who will be unable to be there that day. You do not need to be present to run, so you can pre-register and indicate your interest in serving in different roles. However, please note that only precinct committee members can nominate and vote for Executive Committee and State Convention Delegates.
No one can vote by proxy in the election, and we are still looking into how to make virtual voting feasible, given the requirement of the bylaws. Please email the party at campbellcountydems@gmail.com if you cannot attend the elections but wish to be considered for a leadership position.
I need special accommodations for the day.
We understand that some people may need special accommodations. Please be advised that the building is accessible to all. Please email us at campbellcountydems@gmail.comadvising of the specific accommodations you need.
How do I know what precinct I’m in?
If you are unsure what precinct you live in, you can find that information here: https://vrsws.sos.ky.gov/VIC/
I’m registered as an Independent but support Democratic causes. Can I vote in the elections?
Sorry, no. Only registered Democrats may vote in the elections and hold elective office. You may always change your party registration prior to April 26.
How much time should I expect elections to take?
We expect precinct elections to take less than an hour. For those elected to precinct committees who then vote in the other two elections for the day, we expect to be done by early afternoon.
